Multiple Imagery Work Diary

We were set with the task of capturing nine or more photos of an object or scene for multiple imagery. I was immediately faced with some issues due to the condition of the weather in the times that I wanted to go out to shoot it. In order to compensate for this issue I went into the studio and thought of different ways in which I could show multiple imagery. I was able to use the equipment within the studio in order to help me keep a very consistent image type throughout the time that I was taking pictures. I was able to feature formal elements such as depth and contrast within the image. I used these formal elements in a way that allowed me to create a more visually interesting example of multiple imagery.

For this image I wanted to focus on emotion coming from an individual person that would create an interesting result for multiple imagery. I wanted to try to use different angles in as well as expressions in order to create a result that would show a good amount of variation. There is a contrast featured within the image of black and white. This use of contrast causes the  person to stand out within each frame of the image. Another contrast featured is the contrast of emotion. This results in a visual representation of emotional range. 

For this image I wanted to try to use roughly the same technique but I also wanted to highlight the variation within number of ways. I was able to use props and different people in order to create this variation and I feel that the end result shows a more colourful and exciting example of multiple imagery. This image features examples of contrast of distance, emotion and clothing. Some formal elements such as depth can be seen by showing people at different angles and distances while comparing them.

Progression:

In this subject I wanted to try to get as much variation as I could within the capabilities of the studio. I feel that I could have achieved a better variation within the types of multiple imagery by photographing outside. I would use the environment in order to create an interesting example of multiple imagery that would highlight areas within the environment.

Mapplethorpe Location Work Diary

We were set with the task of capturing Robert Mapplethorpe inspired images within the environment. For this I wanted to focus on capturing interesting images while thinking about the composition. I was able to accomplish this by considering different angles in which I could compose the image and to consider how much of the frame I wanted to dedicate to the subject. I went out to shoot with a few reference images from Mapplethorpe in my head that I wanted to create around the environment. This would allow me to better understand his process and better apply his methods to the other images within the shoot.

This image is taking direct inspiration from one of Robert Mapplethorpe's pictures. I was a fan of how he used this pose to compose his image and I wanted to use this pose to replicate his technique. Formal elements can be seen within this image. The brickwork creates a large pattern which causes contrasts to be seen against the person to the right of the image. The light being cast across the photo show the contrasts in textures. The wall appears rough while the person appears smooth in comparison. Some obvious contrasts in the colour can be seen within the image. This is enhanced with the use of the black and white filter. The black and white colour of the t-shirt and the contrast of the dark wall against the pale skin tone form to cause the person to stand out from the background.

This image is interesting because eI have moved the camera in order to focus on filling the frame from the bottom of the image. This image was inspired from another one of Mpplethorpe's images in which he uses the same technique to fill the bottom of the frame. Clear contrasts are shown within the image. The flower within the image clashes with the dark colour of the hair. There are contrasts between her lighter colour clothing and the dark background which are enhanced by the black and white filter. Tone can be seen within the image which highlight details and the texture of the person's face and clothing.

Progression:

If I were to do this again I would look to show more variation within my images. I would do this by taking inspiration from Mapplethorpe's images and look for interesting ways of composing my pictures.

Studio Contrast 2 Work Diary

We were set with the task of capturing contrast within the studio for the second time. In this shoot I wanted to try to represent contrast in various ways that would make the image interesting. I was able to achieve this to an extent and thought about using different body parts, poses and genders in order to represent contrast in diverse ways. I also looked to use different props in an attempt to show contrast in an interesting way that would differentiate from the other image. Within this second shoot, I was able to better utilise the features of the studio to show contrast in more unique ways.

This image uses props in order to show contrast in an interesting way. The prop allows there to be an easily notable difference within the two subjects. I wanted to show contrast in an interesting way by using colour. I used the white background and compared it to the darker colours of the people. Between the people, further contrasts are shown between the bright hair and the dark hat, and even in the dark clothing compared to the lighter colour clothing of the other person.

This image shows contrast in a simple but interesting way. The use of dark colours against the white background cause the image to appear more striking to the audience and it causes a more notable example of contrast as a result. The light in the image is used to enhance the colour of the background while bringing out the darker colours of the person. There are even contrasts that are brought to attention using colour within the person. The red hair appears bright against the dark clothing.

Progression:

If i were to do this again I would still look to find more exa,plea of contrast and I would also like to consider the use of objects. I feel this would offer a good variation in my work and would produce interesting examples of contrast within the selection.

Walk 2 Work Diary

We were set the task capturing autumn colours, journey and back of heads again for our second group walk. I wanted to address some of the issues that  had previously faced my other attempt. I also wanted to look to cause layers of meaning within the images and I wanted to think of how I could show journey in a more metaphorical sense. I feel that I was able to achieve a good variation within the quantity of photos that I had taken. I wanted to use the dull weather and rain that came before the shoot to create some interesting images, using formal elements such as contrast and reflection.

This image shows a clear example of journey within the contrast of the shoe and nature. It shows us that the two will not naturally be in the same location and journey has caused the two to meet. Aside from contrast some other formal elements can be seen within the image. The reflection of the damp pavement creates reflections of the light being shown on the surface, causing the texture to be more detailed and prominent as a result. The colours within the image differentiate from each other in dramatic ways, creating further contrasts. The dull background of damp branches against the dark pavement clash with the bright colours of clothing featured with colours of white, green and blue.

This image uses some formal elements to show journey. The use of death is a main feature in the image and the road twists and turns off into the distance and appears some what endless. The effect of distance within the image is shown through the use of lines and pattern. The bold white line stands out against the grey pavement and continuously follows the pavement into the distance, the bold contrast makes it easier to see how the line is affected over the change of distance. The pattern of signs can be seen falling down the road to the left of the image. As well as creating a pattern, the signs can be used to show how each sign changes over a distance.

Progression:

If I were to do this again I would attempt to to address one major problem with the focus on back of the head shots. I would search for interesting ways to show the back of the head and would also try to blend elements together to make the image interesting. I would also like to do this shoot on a day that has better weather. This would allow me to focus on other formal elements such as colour.

Contrast 2 Work Diary

We were set with the task of photographing contrast for the second time. For my second attempt I considered all of the weak points of my original shoot and attempted to correct them within this one. I knew the types of variation that I wanted to achieve in this shoot and I wanted to focus on other elements to show contrast in interesting ways. I wanted to use some formal elements within the environment to show more contrasts. Since it had previously been raining before I went out to shoot, I was able to use the reflections from the pavement to my advantage in using formal elements such as reflection and colour.

This picture shows contrast between water and land or even up and down. The use of the reflection in the puddle allows for the picture to become more interesting and opens up more windows for interpretation. This image shows a good amount of the formal elements. Reflection can be used to create a contrast between the ground and the sky. This contrast is mainly shown through the use of different colours. The sky is shown with a pale, bright blue while the ground consists of dark and gritty colours.

This picture shows a straight forward example of contrast. The bright green colour of the nature in the photo stands out against the dull brick work and draws the audiences attention towards the image. Other formal elements can be seen within the image which create further contrasts. The brickwork features a pattern, consisting of neat lines. The bush features a more chaotic image of different shapes and colour tones.

Progression:

If I were to do this again I would like to look for more examples of contrast. To achieve this I could travel further to find interesting locations and objects that show contrast.

Mapplethorpe Studio Work Diary

We were set with the task of taking inspiration from Robert Mapplethorpe's work when shooting in the studio. My main focus of the shoot was to consider the composition of the image while taking photos and I wanted to try to consider some of Mapplethorpe's positioning of his subjects in the image. I was able to incorporate some key formal elements such as contrast and tone. I was able to reference Mappletorpe's work directly with some of my images. This allowed me to further understand the process in which Mapplethorpe takes when composing his images.

For this image I wasted to consider an interesting way of composing my image. To accomplish this interesting composition I wanted to use an action to make the image and pose seem more natural while filling the frame. The white background creates contrasts with the dark colours of the person. This causes the audience to pay full attention on the action of the person. Examples of tone can be seen as the dark shadows on the face of the person gradually become more brighter. This causes more detail to be seen within the image while directing the audience's attention towards the lighter areas of the image.

This image was directly inspired by one of Robert Mapplethorpe's pictures. In the original he fills the frame by having the subject  from side profile while holding the object. The result is a more natural looking image that fills the frame. The brighter tones of the image creates contrasts against the dark background of the image. This use of contrast makes the person the subject of the image, causing the audience to focus only on him. The use of this pose allows for me to capture an image by making the person appear more natural.

Progression:

If I were to of this task again I would address some of the problems that I encountered during the shoot. These problems include some issues with composition and image variation. I would search for more alternative ways of changing the composition of my images. Mapplethorpe has allowed me to consider a number of new ways of composing my images. This will cause my images to appear to be more interesting and cause the subjects to appear more natural.

Walk 1, Work Diary

We were set the task of photographing autumn colours, back of heads and journey whilst on a group walk around to multiple locations. This was unusual at first because we had never done anything as a big group before and I did not know the locations that we were going to be taking pictures in. I found this easy to get used to once I thought about what I wanted to achieve with my images. The variation between locations allowed for some very interesting results and i was able to use road signs to show journey and the forest area to represent autumn colours.

I chose this image mainly because I like the way in which the light is cast across the surface of the tree to show the texture. The enhanced detail also allows us to see some depth in the image as the detail slowly fades. The use of form within the image enhances the textures of the trees. This is achieved as the light is cast across the surfaces of the trees, creating shadows which cause the texture of the tree be more prominent. The intense light creates a contrast within the dark shadows and the bright light. This causes more attention to be pulled towards the more detailed areas of the images.

I chose this picture because of the interesting way in which it shows journey. I knew while taking this image that I wanted to imply the sense of journey. I achieved this by focusing on the shoes as they give the audience some insight as to where they have been and where they are now. Contrasts on the shoes can be seen as the dirt on the shoe clashes with the white colours. This causes the audience's attention to be purposely be directed at the shoe and question where the person has previously been.

Progression:

I thought this was an overall good first attempt. My only hopes if I were to do this again would be to not focus on specific subjects and instead share the focus between all themes. This can be seen in this example where I focused on autumn colours and journey mainly and devoted less attention to back of heads. This walk has showed me the importance of expanding the search for better photographs to wider areas in order to achieve a wider range of image variation.

Contrast Location Work Diary

We were set with the task of capturing contrast within the environment around us. I found this to be an interesting topic because it would allow me to experiment in multiple ways with different elements and subjects. The environment that i worked in offered a good amount of variation between the types of pictures that i could get. Overall, I was able to experiment with contrast in a number ways like through the use of people or nature or other features. I was also able to take advantage of the location in order to show contrast on different scales that I could not achieve within the studio.

This picture shows contrast in a few ways. We can see contrast in size as the objects grow smaller and smaller as the image progresses. Contrasts in colour can be seen as the objects differentiate between lighter and darker colours. Brand contrasts can be seen which provide different logo designs which compare in different ways. There are also contrasts of old and new within the image as each object shows a different state, with the wrapping torn compared to perfect condition. A lot of contrast types can be taken from this image as a result of the variation within the image.

This image focuses on one main theme of contrast. The contrast can be seen within the grass and the pavement. The green colours in the grass are enhanced in this picture against the dull bricks and causes the contrast to become clearer as a result. The colour green offers connotations to good and healthy while the colour of the grey bricks offer connotations of old and vacancy. The formal element pattern can be seen within the image due to the lines of the brick work. Contrasts in texture can be seen within the image, the brick appears rough while the grass appears soft.

Progression:

I found this task to be quite successful but if i were to do it again i would have taken more pictures and tried to vary the ways in which i conveyed tone through my work by looking at other methods or techniques, such as emotional contrast.

Studio Contrast Work Diary

We were set with the task of photographing contrast in the studio. I went in with a number of ideas that i had in relation to the topic but i became very limited within the studio environment and found it quite difficult to portray it. I was still able to get a reasonable amount of pictures with a good variation in things like gender and height along with getting more experience with the studio. I was able to make the images more visually interesting by including some formal elements such as depth, colour and pattern.

This image shows contrast in an interesting way. The shot is composed in a way where one person fills most of the frame with her face while the other fills the frame with her body and it shows an obvious contrast in distance as a result. This image shows the formal element of depth. This is achieved by having someone in the foreground of the image and someone in the background and comparing his the appearance differs over different distances. The darker tones of the clothing create contrasts between the background, causing the people to stand out within the image.

This image shows a couple examples of contrast. The image features contrast in gender by showing two girls and one boy within the image.Height is shown by having the women standing and the boy sitting, this can also be interpreted as to showing power as a result. There are contrasts of emotion within the image through the expressions on the people's faces. The dark clothing and bright hair colour create contrasts against the light background. This causes the people to stand out within the image.

Progression:

If i were to do this again i would think more about the environment that i will be shooting in when thinking about the photos that i want to take. I would also like to still achieve the good variation in pictures while obtaining a larger amount than i was previously able to achieve. The studio has allowed me to consider different backgrounds and the way that they can be used in order to show contrast in interesting ways.

Studio Form, Work Diary

We were set with the task of photographing for in the studio. This was important to help us experiment with different types of form and it also allowed us to get an idea of what it was like to work within the studio and how to use its equipment. I was able to get all of the photos that i wanted and I was able to achieve variation within the photos that i took. My work with portraiture of back of the heads allowed me to come up with interesting ways of composing the image. I was also able to manipulate the light in images to call attention to certain aspects of the person's face by blacking out other areas of the face. I was also able to create an immense amount of detail using the light to make wrinkles in the face more prominent.

I chose this photo because of the way that the shadows help make the picture more emotive. The wrinkles caused by the movement of a smile creates shadow that makes the emotion of the subject stand out to the audiences. The use of form helps to highlight some of these details within the image. Some other formal elements can be seen within the image such as contrast between the dark areas of the image such as the shadows and the clothing and the lighter areas of the face and the white background. This causes the audience to focus on specific areas of the image as the person stands out as a result.

I chose this picture because of the way that it uses formal elements. The light is positioned in a way way that causes a smooth range of tone in the form of shadows from one side of the face to the other. The brightness of the shirt creates contrasts within the background of the image and also gives the picture a good range of colour tones that help the picture to stand out even more. This technique could be used to show examples of hidden identity by using a harsh light to cast a shadow across her face. 

Progression:

If i was to do this again i would use different techniques that would cause my images to become more appealing. If given the chance i would experiment with the subject more by taking photos from different distances and angles instead of the close up photos that i mainly used. I would like to experiment with different back drops that would alter the way in which the picture is perceived. For example, if i used a black background the subject may appear more defined in some areas and it could also allow for a good range of tone, merging shadow with the background. The studio has allowed me to consider the exact positioning of light within my images and the effects with detail that they have on the subjects face.

Location Back of Heads, Work Diary

We were set with capturing images of backs of heads on location in the environment around us. I was able to find some good ways to manipulate the images and produce some interesting results in my photos. The only difficult part was maintaining the amount of variation that i wanted, i had to look for  interesting backgrounds in my environment that were hard to come by but i ultimately found some good examples within the simple bright tones of some painted walls on the side of a building. I was able to incorporate some formal elements such as reflection, shape, and form. This allows for me to produce a more visually interesting image as a result. An advantage of photographing backs of heads is the ability to take photographs while being able to focus more on the composition of a portrait image.

I chose this image because it shows an example of how i was able to show the back of the head and the face of the subject by using angles and reflections from a mirror. This is dramatically different to any of the other pictures that i took, and it's interesting interpretation is more likely to attain the audiences attention. The use of contrast within the dark tones of the person against the white background. This causes the person to be focused on more by audiences as he begins to stand out within the image, highlighting elements such as reflection.

This image shows different examples of formal elements within the image. Tone and form can be seen to be quite prominent in this image, the sun is positioned behind the subject in a way that creates tone around the neck and head area and also casts a shadow on the wall. Examples of contrast can be seen within the image in both the dark tones of the person and the shadow against the lightly coloured wall. The light within the image adds more detail to the person in areas such as the hair on his head.

Progression:

If i were to do this task again I would look further within my environment to find interesting backgrounds for my images. I look forward to photographing the subjects faces in order to throw in another element to my pictures that will convey emotion in their faces and will attract audience attention more.

Studio Back of Heads, Work Diary

We were set with the task of photographing the backs of the heads in the studio. This was used in order to get us used to working in the studio environment and to allow us to think about how we can use portraiture in a variation of ways. We were able to take a good amount of pictures in the studio that varied in a number of ways. We did encounter some technical issues with the camera battery and flash that consumed quite a bit of time but ultimately we were able to complete the task to a good extent. By using the studio, I was forced to think of different ways of composing my images in interesting ways. I was able to come up with some interesting results involving background and movement.

I chose this picture because of the way the light adds more detail to the image. The light can be seen softly bouncing off of the hair, making each strand more prominent. We can also see examples of tone in the hair as the colour slightly changes as it curls off and around the head. Contrasts can be seen within the white background and the red hair. This causes the colour to pop out more to the audiences. The use of movement causes the image to feel more natural than a portrait of a person standing without a movement.

I chose this image because of the way that it draws the audiences attention. The Black background blends perfectly with the black t-shirt and black hair of the subject and causes the audiences eyes to focus on the subject who is the centre of the image. Examples of contrast can be seen within the image which cause the image to stand out. The use of light within the image cause for some aspects such as the person's hair and neck to be more detailed, revealing more tones.

Progression:

-If i were to do this again i would like to have used the time that was taken from technical difficulties more effectively. While I was able to capture a good variation of pictures, I look forward to actually photographing the face so i can capture more exciting examples of portraiture through emotion and movement in the face instead of just different angles of the back of the head. This topic has showed me that i can still take portraits of people even if they aren't facing the camera. This has allowed me to consider the composition of the photo in a way that I wouldn't have if I would have just taken a standard portrait.

Shape, Work Diary

We were set with the task of capturing shape in the environment around us. I went out with a good idea of some of the pictures that i wanted to take and for the most part i was able to use all of my ideas. The only idea that i couldn't use was only prevented because of the low level of light on the day. As a result, i could not capture some of the silhouette ideas that i wanted to use in my work. I went out in search for a good balance in variation in my work, i looked for examples of people, objects and nature; nature was the only part of this topic that i wanted to capture more than i did. Due to the location of my shoot, I had to resort in shooting objects within an indoor location. I was able to capture objects in a way that reflected different examples of formal elements. These examples include colour, contrast, and tone.

I chose this photo because of the way that i was able to use the rainy surface to give a standard example of shape a different effect by showing a reflective surface. Formal elements such as reflection, contrast and pattern can be seen within this image. The wet surface allows for the light to bounce off the surface. Examples of contrast can be seen with the shape of the drain and the complex brick pattern. Pattern can be seen within the brickwork and the cover of the drain.

I chis this photo because of the way that the light affects the image. The light causes the background to appear dark in order to further highlight the shape of the object and draw the audiences attention to it. A clear example of contrast can be seen within the image as the light clashes with the dark background. This contrast causes the shape to be more prominent within the image  by almost creating a silhouette.

Progression:

If I were to do this again I would take more photos, use an area with better lighting conditions in order to capture different examples of shape and i would also like to use more shape in nature in my image collection to add a good variety of pictures. This topic has caused me to notice the individual details of the shape within my images. I could use shapes in a way to show other elements such as pattern which can make my images more interesting.

Photojoiner, work diary

We were set with the task of capturing phtojoiner in the form of three different subjects. I wanted to focus my photojoineron three different scales. I wanted to use the technique in a way that would use it's benefits to create a more interesting image. I was able to accomplice this especially in the image of the person by taking photos of different areas and emotions that would not be present within a standard image. We had to take multiple pictures of the object so it could be edited in photoshop. For my three objects, i chose a person, a building and a bin. I was able to capture a range of images and i had enough to begin my editing.The process was quite longwinded at first but as i became accustomed to the techniques that would be required i was able to complete them at a much faster rate.

I chose this image because it shows a person in an interesting way. The image consists of different angles and distances, this chaotic collection of images come together in a way that causes the picture to actually form an image. I was able to take advantage of this technique as I looked at many different angles that would not be visible in a standard image in order to create a very disjointed portrait of a person. This technique also allowed for me to capture more detail within the person's face by focusing on individual aspects of the person's face.

This image shows an ordinary object that is made interesting by the way that it is presented. There are a lot of images that form together to create this end results, all from different angles and perspectives that change the way in which the audience will perceive this object. This image is slightly less disjointed and chaotic than the last as the images almost seamlessly form together. This technique causes the audience's attention to be directly focused on the bin by creating an interesting visual representation of the object while blurring out the background.

Progression:

If i were to do this again, i would take a lot more images that would vary in size and angles in order to produce much more interesting results. I also would have liked to try a landscape shot in order to add a good variation between the other subjects. I would also like to shoot in a place that will have a more consistent source of light. Where i was shooting was surrounded by buildings, this means that i could lose light in some pictures and they would become darker than the rest and make them seem out of place. This topic has allowed me to consider a new and interesting way of capturing everyday objects. I would like to consider this if I am ever photographing an everyday object and need a way to make it interesting.

Texture, Work Diary

We were set with the task of capturing texture in the environment. The task began extremely well as we began with good weather that gave us the light that we needed to capture textures of objects on a smaller scale. The intense light that was strung across different surfaces assisted me greatly in showing immense detail of the texture on the surface. I was able to incorporate some formal elements such as form and tone in a way that showed detail and shape within the environment, producing visually interesting examples of texture. The weather did not last for too long as we were eventually forced to stop due to clouds approaching overhead. I took some pictures of texture where i could but it was only until the clouds cleared that we were able to continue photographing with ease. I was able to capture a good range of photographs.

I chose this photo because it shows us a simple example of texture that is made interesting by camera and light positioning. The light is cast across the surface in a way that allows us to view all of the individual details within the frame that would not commonly be seen in an everyday situation. Examples of form can be seen within the image that add more detail to the image. Examples of pattern can be seen within the brick work that show pattern through lines.

The texture of the tree in this image because the light comes into true picture form an angle that gives the image more detail. The light casts large shadows that show you the depth of the cracks and details in the tree. We can also see a good example of tone as we see the light come in from the right, slowly growing darker as the tree gets further away from the light source. Form can be seen within this image as it uses the shadows to enhance the details within the tree further.

Progression:

 if i were to do the task again, i would have chosen a day with more consistent weather so that i could take more time with the photos that i was taking and have a more diverse collection. This topic has allowed me to focus on the different ways in which I can capture extreme detail within my images. I would like to use the new techniques that i have learned in my images to maintain this level of detail with the light casting across the surface.

Movement, Work Diary

Today we were set with the task of capturing images including movement. Originally i had the idea to take pictures of moving cars going down the road, this didn't quite work as i planned because i wasn't able to take photos of cars moving very fast in that environment. Instead, i had to change location and focus on taking photos inside of buildings that have a lower level of light. Originally this came with its own set of complications as I light is critical for capturing movement. Once I found some well lit areas around the shopping centre I was able to capture some interesting examples of movement across different scales and genres. I was able to get a good amount of variation in some pictures.

I chose this photo as it shows an example of movement on a person. I like this because it shows two expressions of the subject that have been urged into one. The look of this photo is similar to an illusion as it is difficult to tell where one image ends and the other begins. We can also see examples of contrast between the white background and the dark clothing of the person.

I chose this photo because it is an example of movement in an everyday setting ad situation. The side of the frame is full with blurring of movement of the doors and of the people moving. The image starts in a chaotic way but as you bring your eyes to the centre of the image you can see the image begin to slow and become clearer. We cam see examples of pattern of the tiles on the floor. Examples of depth can be seen as the image begins to change over longer distances.

Progression:

 but if i was to do it again i would have tried to find some different examples, i would also learn from my mistakes with the lighting and be able to focus more of my time on finding interesting examples. The use of the slow shutter speed offers some interesting looking results that I would like to use in my own work. This effect would be good if I wanted to find ways of showing light or depth and would cause my images to become more eye catching.

Reflection, Work diary

We were set with the task of capturing reflection in our environment. We began with an advantage because the weather was very bright and sunny. This allowed us to easily photograph our examples with a lot more clarity. We took advantage of our environment and went over to the town to see the different examples of reflection. In shops we were able to find machines that reflected along with mirrors that we were able to photograph in a clothing store. I was able to capture different examples of reflection while incorporating different formal elements. I was able to capture light reflecting off a surface in a way that showed texture. I was also able to show pattern within reflections. Overall, i was very pleased with the different examples that i was able to find, along with the quantity of photos that i had collected.

I chose this image because it shows reflection in a mirrored object. The images within the reflection are slightly distorted due to the curved shape of the mirror. We can also see some examples of depth as the warped background slowly begins to fade into the distance. The frame of the mirror allows for some elements of pattern to be seen. We can also see an example of contrast of urban environments within the reflection and the nature in the background.

I chose this example because it shows reflection on a different surface type. Instead of the typical mirrored surface, we are given a shiny metal material that reflects the light and gives a soft glow on the surface that slowly changes the tone of the wall. This shows us that even though the surface isn't reflecting a clear image, we are still able to show some interesting effects on the surface that are able to highlight different formal elements.

Progression:

 If i had to change anything i would have tried to find some replacements for the shop window reflections that i captured which could have been replaced by a more interesting alternative. I liked this subject as it allowed me to consider the effect that reflection can have on the image. I would like to incorporate this use of reflection in order to highlight elements of the image such as light and depth.

Tone, Work Diary

We were set with the task of capturing images of tone using the environment around us. For this project we changed the filter of the camera to a black and white setting for the first time, we were able to capture tone far more easily. We were also assisted by the cloudy weather because it added to the different shades of grey that we were able to find. I wanted to search for unique examples of tone and in order to achieve this i used multiple examples of the formal elements. An example of this is when we went inside a building to take photos, i used the reflection of the floor along with the depth of the large open spaces to capture even more shades. I was happy with the amount of photos that i was able to collect and i took the photos back to edit the best ones out of the collection.

I like this image that i captured because of the multiple formal elements that can be seen taking place. The light is seen reflecting from the floor, introducing a new range of colours, along with the depth of the hallway that makes the brightness of the image dim down as the distance increases.

I also chose this picture because some of the same formal elements are seen playing parts in this photo through different mediums. The use of reflection is now represented through the rain soaked street. We can see the like strongly reflecting off puddles and continues up the street. Depth can be seen as i have used people to show the change in distance as well as the change in tone.

Progression: 

If i was to do this again, i would like to include other forms of tone and i would like to look more into natural elements instead of modern structures. I enjoyed using the black and white filter within this topic and the way that it enhances certain aspects of image such as light and reflection. I would like to incorporate the use of a black and white filters in my photos in order to make them appear more striking and noticeable.

Form, work diary

We were set the task of capturing images of form. As it was a sunny, day it was easy to find to find a range of potential examples of form. i searched for a number of examples, looking in nature, building structure and common items that i could find in the environment. Sometimes it was difficult to fully capture the form of some objects because there would be moments where the sunshine would weaken for a bit but overall the sun stayed out for most of the time that we were out shooting. I was worried about the range of my photos after i had spent a while taking pictures because i had explored most of the areas around me. to reduce the repetition of my photos, i expanded the area that i was originally taking photos in and i started to take photos in the town; as a result i was able to add more photos to my collection.

I chose this image because it represents form through the use of other formal elements. Reflection is used to give another tone to the side of the object, making it seem 3D. The shadow that is cast upon the wall is also an indicator of the size of the object and the positioning of the light source.

i chose this image because it is an example of form that i personally staged. Since the broom has only a thin handle, i thought it would be best to represent form through shadow. You can see the interesting way in which the shadow wraps around some parts of the wall in order to show its positioning and distance.

Progression:

If i could have done anything differently, i would have gone into the town much sooner as there was much more diversity in the types of form that i was able to find around me. This topic has allowed me to think about the object in relation to the background of my images and what effect that they have on each other. I also would like to use my work with form as a way to really think about the use of light within my image and the effect that it has.

Depth, work diary

we were set with the task of capturing photos of depth. i was able to find multiple examples of depth in the environment around me and i mainly focused on buildings, corridors, pavement and other structures around me that i feel best showed depth. I was able to focus on depth within different scales through the use of different angles. I was also able to incorporate some key formal elements such as colour and lines in order to make the image more visually dynamic. after i had a collection of depth related images, i went back to make a contact sheet of all of them and edited some of the photos. if i were to do this again, i would take a larger collection of photos that were still quite diverse.

i chose these two examples of depth out of my photos because they both represent depth on different scales. The first shows depth on a much smaller scale, the panelling on the fence show a change in size and shade of colour shown with a nature based background. The second shows depth on a much larger scale. using a fence and the brick wall of a building the image is able to show depth. you can see a dramatic change in size over a large distance making this image a very strong example of depth.

Progression:

 if i were to do this again, i would take a larger collection of photos that were still quite diverse. I would also like to try to use more formal elements in my examples. This topic has allowed me to think about my images on different scales. I can can now judge how to think about my images on both a large and small scale. I would like to incorporate this topic into my work by thinking about the background of my images and the size of everything within the image.
