Depth, work diary

we were set with the task of capturing photos of depth. i was able to find multiple examples of depth in the environment around me and i mainly focused on buildings, corridors, pavement and other structures around me that i feel best showed depth. I was able to focus on depth within different scales through the use of different angles. I was also able to incorporate some key formal elements such as colour and lines in order to make the image more visually dynamic. after i had a collection of depth related images, i went back to make a contact sheet of all of them and edited some of the photos. if i were to do this again, i would take a larger collection of photos that were still quite diverse.

i chose these two examples of depth out of my photos because they both represent depth on different scales. The first shows depth on a much smaller scale, the panelling on the fence show a change in size and shade of colour shown with a nature based background. The second shows depth on a much larger scale. using a fence and the brick wall of a building the image is able to show depth. you can see a dramatic change in size over a large distance making this image a very strong example of depth.

Progression:

 if i were to do this again, i would take a larger collection of photos that were still quite diverse. I would also like to try to use more formal elements in my examples. This topic has allowed me to think about my images on different scales. I can can now judge how to think about my images on both a large and small scale. I would like to incorporate this topic into my work by thinking about the background of my images and the size of everything within the image.

Both of these images use depth on different scales. Both of the images have the same effect as they attempt to show distance as the object decreases in size as it gets further away. The resulting affect of this image is to get the audience to focus there attention on where the structures lead.

These images show depth in different forms. we are able to perceive depth in different ways, whether it be in nature, everyday settings, or in common items; depth can reveal how an object changes over a distance. i chose these images because i feel that they cover most bases of the types of depth you can find. in these photos we can appreciate how much the objects in the images can change over different distances because we are given a repetition of objects in some pictures that really highlight these changes.

This picture shows a natural example of depth. This image is interesting because it shows a wide landscape shot that fills the frame but the details of the image get smaller as the distance increases.

This is an interesting example of depth because the focus of the camera has been used to emphasise the distance of the bulbs. 

This is a good example of depth as there are multiple points in the photo that are used to create it. Things like the handrails have been used to show you the difference between the same object at different distances. you can see how the scene becomes smaller over a greater distance in the photo as a result of this.

This is an example of depth in an everyday environment. we would overlook these examples in everyday life but the photo clearly shows a sense of depth on a much smaller scale as you can see the chain in the photo appears to change the same way that an object would over a larger distance.
