Definition:

Personal Definition:

This photo shows contrast in the form of colour. The use of a vibrant colour in a dull background causes the audiences eye to focus on one specific part of the image. This is also exaggerated by the use of focus that blurs out the background and causes the flower to stand out more.

This image shows contrasts in life. The photographer has used exact opposites in size to show contrast. The differences are extremely noticeable due to similar plain backgrounds and opposite poses.

This image shows contrast that has been edited into a photo. The flowers have been enhanced by the use of a black and white background which causes the audiences eyes to focus on that specific part of the picture due to the contrast in colours.

This picture shows a contrast in both colour and subject, The flower stands out because it is the only one of its kind that is visible within the frame. This is further enhanced by the contrast in colours as the red is immediately more vibrant than the green.

Portraiture Definition Post

Definition:

-The art of painting or taking portraits.

Personal Definition:

-Pictures that focus specifically on a person or subject

This example of portraiture is dealing with a very young child. Low key lighting is being used with a balance of black and white to add to the tone and compliment the soft features of the child's face while making him the main focus of the image.

This example of portraiture uses high key lighting. This helps to define the face of the subject and show age defining features such as mild wrinkles and facial hair that help to add emotion to the face.

A black and white filter is used in this filter. This helps to emphasise the tone in the picture and adds to the shadows being cast in the image that help to exaggerate wrinkles in the face to show more emotion and movement on the subject.

A close up picture is used in this example. This helps to completely fill the frame and as a result helps to make the audience purely focus on the subject in the photo, highlighting any emotion present in the eyes or facial movement.

Texture, Definition Post

Definition:

-The feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance
-give (a surface) a rough or raised texture

Personal Definition:

-The surface of an object that can appear rough or smooth

Describing words: Abrasive, Acute, Angular, Arid, Ballooned

This picture shows texture in a natural setting. The reflective surface of the water is used to enhance the light in the image that give the surface of the water a 3D look so that we can see the individual bumps of it.

Here we are given an example of texture on a living animal. We are given the texture in the image in the form of wrinkles on the chimp's face. The texture of the face differentiates as the face begins to merge with the hair on the animals head giving it a rough texture.

This shows texture on a larger scale. The texture that we can see in this image is only presented in the form of the way that the rocks pile up. Since we can not see the texture of the individual rocks, we have to judge the image by the way that the rocks themselves collectively give the image a jagged texture that is rough and uneven.

In this picture we can see that the texture of the animal is clearly represented through light and shadows, the individual wrinkles are made more prominent through the high amount of lighting and the use of a black and whit filter that highlights the tone of the image.

Shape, Definition Post

Definition:

-the external form, contours, or outline of someone or something

-a geometric figure such as a square, triangle, or rectangle

Personal Definition: The form in which an object appears

This image shows shape in both a physical representation and in the form of a shadow. The mixture of the shadow and the object ensures that the frame is being field while introducing other formal elements such as tone

This picture shows shape in multiple examples while still using the same object. We can see different examples of sizes and shape of different parts of the same object which produce interesting results.

This picture shows how shape has been used with light. The sun being placed directly behind the person makes the body appear as a silhouette. This causes the shape of the person to appear clearly and creates a clearer representation of shape than we would have seen if the clothes and other individual details were present in the picture.   

This picture uses multiple objects of the same shape to create an overall shape in the image. The pencils are individually placed in a certain order that causes them to form a circle. This is also used to create a colour spectrum that blends the colour in the image together in an interesting way.

Movement, Definition Post

Definition:

-an act of moving
-a group of people working together to advance their shared political, social, or artistic ideas

Describing words: Slow, Unhurried, Measured, Stately

Personal Definition:  Something moving from point A to point B

This image shows an object that has been captured mid movement. The use of the water being captured in mid air with the air bubbles flowing to the surface past the object shows us that the object is moving very fast, and is hitting the surface very hard.

This object shows an example of movement over a long period of time. The photographer has captured the movement of the subject by slowly capturing the images over a long period of time. The end result reveals interesting blurred images of every place that the person has moved while capturing the photo, leaving us with one clear final image of the person standing in the centre of the frame. This is an interesting way that you can fill the frame of the image by using a unique example of movement.

I chose this image because of the way that the image draws your attention to a specific point in the photo by using movement. The camera has been focused in the bear, this allows the background to become extremely blurred by the movement. This leaves us with one point of focus in the picture because it is the only clear part of the image.

This image shows an example of movement in nature. This is image is an example of movement being captured without any real blurring. The photographer achieves this by positioning the camera at an angle that allows the light to reflect off of the water, revealing the lines in the stream that cause your eyes to follow them in order to give you an understanding of which direction the water is flowing. The black and white filter of the photo also adds tone that allows us to see where the water is dipping down and crashing.

Reflection, Definition Post

Definition:

-the throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it
-serious thought or consideration

Personal Definition:

-Light that bounces off a surface

Describing words: Replication, Strong, Fuzzy, Exact

This example uses reflection to show aspects of other formal elements. The umbrella is shown with the light from the sun shining through, adding vibrant colours to the picture and is being shown reflected in the puddle. The angle of the reflection also adds to the depth of the image as it is changing the appearance of the man by making him seem taller.

This image is a simple form of reflection. I like this example because it highlights one of the many ways that you can express points and ideas through formal elements such as reflection. This adds more depth to the picture and makes it more interesting overall.

This image shows how reflection can really alter the appearance if objects and people. The light in the water is refracting the light which is causing the image to seem disjointed. This technique shows us another example of how you can adjust represent an image in multiple ways through reflection

This image is my favourite out of the selection. It shows another way that reflection can be used to make a photo even more interesting. The mirror is angled towards the camera in a certain way that makes the girl seem invisible in parts. The backgrounds are perfectly lined up, adding to the illusion of the photo.

Tone, Definition Post

Definition:

-a musical or vocal sound with reference to its pitch, quality, and strength
-the general character or attitude of a place, piece of writing, situation, etc

Describing words: Fresh, Bold, Dull, Dreary

Personal Definition:

-The overall lightness or darkness of an area of an object that can be effected by light

In this image, we can see an example of tone in a natural setting. The natural light from the sun is a big factor in this picture as the light is breaking through the branches and casting shadows and different darker tones with the shadows wrapping around the tree bark and branches. The light can also be seen breaching through the individual leaves creating an even balance of dark and light tones.

This is an example of tone on a person. We can clearly see the way that the tone slowly changes around his face because of where he is standing in relation to the light. The expression that the man is making also dramatically affects the tone of the photo as it creates wrinkles in the face that cast shadows and highlight certain areas of light on the face like the cheeks and forehead.

This image shows an example of tone in a modern setting. in this photo, artificial light plays a big role and because it is presented at night and the light is emitting from street lamps which mean that they are hitting objects from different areas than would be possible from a natural light source. The light is seen reflecting off of the wet pavement, creating a mix of light and dark tones that can be seen. in the trees, we can see the light hitting only parts of the trees. This allows us to see a full scale of the tone going all the way from the brightest side of the tree, to the darkest.

This image shows tone in an interesting way. The first notable difference is the way that this is not a usual black and white image that you would tend to see. instead we are given a filter with another colour that highlights the tone in the bird that would become less visible in a black and white format. The light reflects off of the bird, giving it a shine that draws lighter tones together in the picture on a more unusual texture. usually capturing tone on a black surface can be vey difficult, this picture shows an example of a way that you can capture tone on different colours using different methods.

Form, definition post

This image features form in a city setting. The shadow in this photo is extremely prominent due to the black and white filter that has been used. the reflections off of the windows in this image act in parallel to the dark tones of the shadows and really give the buildings a 3D look.

This photo shows form on a small scale that uses the simple cubed shape of dice to create a 3d image. shadows are effectively used in smaller circumstance that acts opposite the white of the dice to make the 3D more effective.

This image shows form in on a mask. The heavy use of shadows in this photo exaggerate the shape of the mask. The material of the mask gently reflects the light in the photo in a way that shows all of the curves of the mask clearly showing that it is a 3D object.

This image shows form in nature and on a living creature. The grass on the hill show that the floor is uneven. The fur on the animal reflects the light slightly, giving it a a darker shading in some areas that give it a 3D appearance.

depth, definition post

Definition:

This picture shows a natural example of depth. This image is interesting because it shows a wide landscape shot that fills the frame but the details of the image get smaller as the distance increases.

This is an interesting example of depth because the focus of the camera has been used to emphasise the distance of the bulbs. 

This is a good example of depth as there are multiple points in the photo that are used to create it. Things like the handrails have been used to show you the difference between the same object at different distances. you can see how the scene becomes smaller over a greater distance in the photo as a result of this.

This is an example of depth in an everyday environment. we would overlook these examples in everyday life but the photo clearly shows a sense of depth on a much smaller scale as you can see the chain in the photo appears to change the same way that an object would over a larger distance.

Definition:

my definition:

Describing words:

This is an example of pattern in a natural environment. This photo shows an interesting example of pattern that uses reflection to completely fill the frame of the photo with pattern.

This is an example of pattern in a typical setting. this is a pattern that would tend to be overlooked but you can see how the markings on the metal form a large quantity of diagonal lines that form an evenly distributed pattern.

This is an example of pattern in a structural design. what makes this example interesting is the way that the photographer captures pattern in both the structure and in the shadows that have been cast on the walls by the structure.

This is a set up example that the photographer has arranged. this photo uses the repetition of objects in a line and a good use of reflective surfaces that repeat the same pattern on each object.

colours, definition post

The definition:

-the property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way it reflects or emits light.

Describing words: Ablaze, Brash, Bright, Delicate

Personal definition:

-the shade of something that we associate with a colour.

I chose these images because they show extremely diverse colours in nature. the parrot shows bold, separate colours that slowly fade into each other. the second picture shows a great example of colours  with the light from the sun dramatically adding to the different shades as it slightly breaches through the leaves.

i chose these two photos as they both represent colour in environments and there are multiple factors t these photos that contribute to the colour in the photo. each photo offers a good variation of colour in the balloons and in the paint on the walls. what makes these photos special is the way the different lights play parts in the photos to blend them together. the sky in the background of the first photo shines straight through each balloon creating a brighter colour pallet. in the second photo, the street lights offer different shades of colour as the light bounces off the walls. meanwhile, the sunset in the background gives the picture a slightly purple and pink filter that blends each aspect of the photo into one.

this photo features a complex structure that is lined with tinted glass that has been arranged in a spectrum of colours. this photo shows the way that the colours run together extremely smoothly. the light in the photo also causes an amazing pattern to be cast onto the floor revealing a plethora of colour that could not be seen before.

Lines definition

Definition of a line:

Describing lines:

this image shows a tiger with a striped line pattern in its fur. this acts as a natural camouflage in some environments. the whiskers on the tigers face also show different lines on the tiger apart from the fur.

This image features a building that shows interesting line structures. the first is the simple grid design in which the windows form up the side of the building. The second set of lines that are featured show a criss-cross pattern that creates a diamond shape up the building.

This image features a desert location with an almost hypnotic sand formation that has been formed in a natural pattern. you can notice the similarities in each line but you can also see the differences slightly.

This image shows a two rail lines cutting through the autumn forest in a straight line. the images background is full up with trees that curve off in multiple directions in an immense number.
